There are few places in Denver that photograph as beautifully during golden hour as Cheesman Park.  With its wide-open lawns, historic architecture, mature trees, and breathtaking views of the city skyline, it's easy to see why so many couples choose this iconic location for their engagement photos.  


Recently, I had the wonderful opportunity to photograph an engagement session at Cheesman Park just before sunset, and it perfectly showcased everything that makes this location so special.

Why  Cheesman Park is Perfect for Engagement Photos


Kate and Jacob came to me with a vision for their engagement photos. They wanted beautiful architecture, somewhere close to or within Denver, and pockets of nature to keep things romantic. Cheesman Park checked every box.


One of the biggest advantages of Cheesman Park is the variety it offers within a single, accessible location. Couples can enjoy elegant portraits near the historic pavilion, romantic walks along tree-lined paths, and sweeping landscape images that capture Denver's urban charm in the distance.


The park's elevated location also provides incredible natural light throughout the evening. As the sun begins to dip behind the mountains, the entire park glows with golden tones that create a dreamy, romantic atmosphere.

Golden Hour Magic


I knew golden hour would make for some incredible photos all throughout the park.  Golden hour is often considered the best time of day for engagement photography, and this session was a perfect example of why. The soft sunlight wrapped around the couple, creating beautiful highlights and gentle shadows that complemented every image.


We started the session while the sun was still high enough to illuminate through the pavilion for a dramatic flair, and then moved throughout the flower gardens and into the large pastures. As the evening progressed, the light became softer and more directional, creating stunning backlit portraits that felt both timeless and intimate.

Capturing Genuine Connection


The best engagement sessions aren't about stiff poses or forced smiles. They're about creating space for couples to be themselves and enjoy the experience together.  Most, if not all of my clients tell me they're inexperienced and awkward when it comes to photos, which is absolutely understandable. It's not every day that someone gets engaged or married, that's where I come in and help people bring their vision to life with posing suggestions and prompts.


Throughout the session, we focused on natural movement and authentic interaction. Whether they were walking hand-in hand, sharing quiet moments, or laughing together, the goal was to document their relationship in a way that felt genuine and true to who they are.


Those unscripted moments often become the photographs couples treasure most.

Planning Your Cheesman Park Engagement Session


If you're considering Cheesman Park for your engagement photos, I highly recommend scheduling your session during the last hour before sunset. The lighting is consistently beautiful, and the park tends to feel more relaxed as the day winds down.  


However,  Cheesman Park is known to host a variety of activities going on around the park throughout the week. There's almost always some kind of event  or meeting happening no matter the day, so keep that in mind when planning your engagement session.


Spring, summer, and fall all offer unique looks throughout the park. From lush green landscapes to vibrant autumn colors, every season provides a different backdrop for your engagement photographs.


This golden hour engagement session at Cheesman Park was a reminder of how beautiful simple moments can be when paired with great light and meaningful connection. The combination of Denver's iconic scenery, warm evening light, and authentic emotion made for an unforgettable experience.
